The Last Show

15 Mar

Isaac was home early this morning (12.40AM) from the cast and crew party after the last performance of Grease, this year’s high school musical production.  He was sad.  Why?  “It was the last show” of his high school career.   Isaac runs sound.

We went to the first show Thursday evening.  The teachers and students did an admirable job. The lead singers are very good.  A local dance teacher choreographed intricate, interesting dances. The jazz band was led by the high school music teacher on sax.  And all the actors are hams and play their parts to the hilt.  Of course they play to a very friendly house, which helps everyone do a great job.  I had never seen the HS auditorium so full!  Isaac told us that Friday and Saturday nights they set up extra chair seats and had to turn people away.

With the advent of the internet many aspects of production have simplified.  Take costumes as an example.  The director ordered lovely period costumes from an online theatrical costumer.  Studded leather jackets, satin party dresses, the pink jackets for the tough girls, with their group name embroidered in silver on the back, plaid jackets and pants, etc.    Individual, nonintrusive mics for each lead singer.

The program was done in a high school yearbook motif.  A bright pink cover with “Rydell High” on front and the ‘alma mater’ on the back, yearbook-like photos for the cast.  Clever.
