Sigh

6 Mar

I am not E. Bennett.

It seems I am Elinor Dashwood of Sense & Sensibility!

“You are practical, circumspect, and discreet. Though you are tremendously sensible and allow your head to rule, you have a deep, emotional side that few people often see.”

Which Jane Austen lady are you?

The Cave and the Beasts

6 Mar

Isabelle dug this a few days ago.  We had sunshine yesterday and it is sunny here this morning so sometime in the next week the snow may melt enough for the cave to collapse.  But not yet.

Angela called yesterday and wondered if we had enough snow for her to ski on.  Um, plenty.

The deer are not venturing out at all.  Their sharp hooves would plunge through the crust; walking would be tough.  They are penned up somewhere–the pine wood block most likely. Their life is quite hard now.  We have had solid snow cover for going on three months.  Although  a couple would have not had to go through this if they had come by when I was in the stand during gun season in the fall.

A pair of geese come each morning to the spring-fed pond for food: watercress.  There is very little elsewhere.  Have no pity for them, they should have flown south like they ought.

The past two mornings we have heard–Isabelle saw–the bluebirds.  They were here in January, then left.  Back again in this cold and barren time: Jay looked in the box where they stay at night; the droppings there indicated the birds had not digested the seeds they had eaten.  They are insect eaters.   To hear them singing lifts my heart; but what will they live upon?

The cave is very commodious.  Several people and their dogs could fit inside in relative comfort.
